Behind My Desk…

New things are happening in the Genealogy Department. As I’ve mentioned before, they now have a phone extension. That has helped us to not have so many messages over the intercom system to interrupt our patrons who are working or reading.

They should have by the time this article is printed in the paper a new microfilm reader scanner. Our old one has gone to that recycle bin in the sky. It was a good friend, but it’s time had come. The new one will work with a computer and regular desk printer. Thanks to the Friends of the Library, the department will have a new computer, printer, and monitor. We appreciate their donation for those items. This was not as easy a transfer of equipment as I had hoped for. I think the wait will be worth it.

Staffing is always an important duty for the library director. Janie is slowly working her way back to full time after taking eight weeks for foot surgery and other crises. Last Friday was Kelsey’s last day with us. She plans to further her education, and we wish her well. Yes, we do have an opening for a part-time page at the library. Stop by the library for an application and more information.

At the last board meeting it was decided to change to a cleaning service for the library, so I’m looking into contract bids for that.

This week I went with some of the other Cass County librarians to visit the Cyber Library on the Council Bluffs campus of Iowa Western Community College. My, oh, my!

I should also mention that yes, the library does have copies of the three main Federal tax forms (1040EZ, 1040A, and the 1040). Unfortunately, we do not have instructions for the 1040 yet. We have ordered them and the reproducible tax forms, but the government has notified us that it will be at least the end of January before we see them. I know. Irritating, isn’t it?

One last thing…I’ve been doing one of my favorite tasks again. Take a look at the library webpage at www.atlantic.lib.ia.us. I added a weather “widget” to the page, so you can see what the weather people think is happening in Atlantic with radar, road conditions, weather alerts and forecasts. Did You Know…the Atlantic Public Library has a computer downstairs exclusively for filing your taxes online? The library employees are not tax preparers, but they can show you the IRS site and the Iowa Revenue site for you!

Behind My Desk… The holidays are officially over and decorations are coming down and now we are seeing Valentine’s Day things. Doesn’t it seem to you that we are being rushed into every holiday whether we are ready or not?

Please take note about the Preschool Story Times for January and February. Wednesdays are for 3 & 4 year olds and Thursdays are for 4 & 5 year olds.

About this time every year we renew, and sometimes add and subtract our magazine subscriptions. Every community is different. We check to see what titles are circulating and of interest to our patrons. Some magazines go out of business, so we try to find similar titles to fill in; and sometimes our patrons give us suggestions. In March Diane goes through our collection and weeds out our older issues, so you may want to watch our “Book Sale Cart” for any bargains.

I should mention that the library is through with holidays now until Memorial Day. So, unless the weather gets very nasty, the library should be open normal hours.

Next week we should be getting our new microfilm reader/scanner for the Genealogy/Local History Room. Our old machine was a true “work horse” for us, but we were very close to no longer finding replacement parts for it. It was time to see what we could find that would help us for future research as well as using older materials. It was an expensive purchase, but I think it will be a good one.

Behind My Desk… I have decided that I am a “reading” advertisement for an ereader! I take it with me often when I think I might have a few moments to spare and read. It makes a great “ice breaker” to start a conversation. I enjoy eating out and usually I’m alone, so having a book along is more comfortable for me. I have waiters and other diners stop and ask about what I’m reading and if I like the ereader. It gives me an opportunity to show first-hand what the ereader is like and the things I like about it. Then I can give an extra plug for the library by telling them about downloading ebooks for free from the WILBOR site on the library webpage. (I’m sneaky that way!) It’s never too late for an ereader gift! Oh, and they are great for traveling!

The Atlantic Public Library will be hosting the next All Cass County Reads program at the end of March. The book we will be discussing is Rosanne Bachman’s Driving to Clarinda. I know Rosanne has spoken to a few groups here already, so I think she plans to focus on the writing aspect. If you haven’t had the opportunity to read her book, we have several extra copies available for circulation. Please feel free to ask at the upstairs desk for a copy to checkout.

I found Driving to Clarinda a very good read. It’s short in length, but filled with Rosanne’s insights into trying to cope with mental illness in the family. I recommend it.

Lately, I’ve had several people wanting instruction on how to use our WILBOR site to download audiobooks and ebooks.

First of all, you will need your library card number.

Go to www.atlantic.lib.ia.us
In the middle of the library home page there is an icon saying “Download audiobooks and ebooks”.
Click on the icon. That should take you to the WILBOR homepage.
On the left side column click on the “Need Help?” icon. This steps you through the process.
Follow the instructions for your media player (mp3 player, Kindle, Nook, etc.).
You may need to download an application to your mobile device, or a small piece of free software to your computer for some readers/players.

Did You Know…that the Atlantic Public Library has a CD music collection? We even have some Christmas CDs!

Behind My Desk… Last week I went to the annual Friends of the Library meeting held at the library. They had a terrific used book sale in November! They made more than $800 in just the book sale and doubled that amount in memberships. Wow! The library, in return, was given $2000 for various projects. One of the members had specifically wished to have some money given to the WILBOR database, so $500 of that money will go to adding new titles for ebooks. The group also totally understood the importance of library security, so $500 will go to the security camera project.

The Cass County Genealogical Society had a couple representatives at the Friends meeting, as well. They have been thinking about needing an update of the 1980 Cass County History Book. The Friends agreed that this was an important project and will collaborate on this if enough people are interested in submitting their family histories, order a book and volunteer to help with the project. If you are interested, please contact the Genealogy Society at the library or email to casscgs@yahoo.com.

Good things come to those who wait…and wait…and…. The Genealogy/Local History Dept. has a phone right in their room!!! Last week the library changed to a new phone system and one of the upgrades was to add a mobile phone in the Genealogy room. Now, when you call the library, you will have a choice of speaking to someone downstairs (Children’s), upstairs (Adult) or the Genealogy Room. We hope this will help all of us.

I know. I’m stuck on Genealogy, but there is more good news for them! We now have CDs of the digitization of our early Atlantic newspapers. You can also access the database online from the library website. This way we have two different copies of all that work! The library board will be discussing at the meeting on Monday about purchasing a new microfilm reader/printer/scanner system. This system will be connected to a computer and printer for easier use of the microfilm collection. The Friends group also helped contribute to this purchase.

Some of you have asked about Janie. She had foot surgery in November and is recuperating at home. We hope to see her back on the job after the first of the new year, but we’ll wait and see how things are going.

Also, please have patience when telephoning the library. The telephone system is new for all of us!

Behind My Desk…November has been quite a month, and I’ve been doing all sorts of things. I was asked to give a report about library trends to the City Council at their meeting on the 16^th. I put together a list of ten trends we’ve seen in the last five years. That was an eye-opener for me. I knew it, but I hadn’t taken the time to collect and evaluate all the things that are happening.

The ten trends are:

10. Technology Explosion

9. Increased Print Material digitization

8. Social Media/Communication

7. Financial Concerns

6 Mandates from the State and Federal Government

5. Security

4. The “Cloud”

3. Community accessibility

2. Service Area

1. Going Green

All of these trends influence library services. The library is not stagnant. It continues to evolve and change.

I also volunteered to work on a County Library calendar for November and December to show all the different events going on in each of the six county libraries. My Goodness, we’re a busy group! We have all sorts of wonderful things going on!

In the mean time, we have replaced three outside doors and are in the midst of upgrading the library phone system. The Genealogy Department will also have its own extension!

Even in bad economic times, we have so much to be thankful for...

Behind My Desk… Once again, it’s time to work on the budget for the next fiscal year. Our years run from July 1 to June 30 the following year. As a result, it’s important to always be thinking ahead as to what will be needed to help our patrons. It’s hard to know about technology that far ahead, but it is important to be looking at trends and being prepared for new things.

Our City administration has been stressing how important it is to keep our infrastructure working properly. The library board has also been active in keeping our library looking attractive and well maintained. Yes, we have some issues, but the board and I are aware of them and are trying to work on them. That takes money. As it is true with most households, there is only so much money to go around to the various city departments.

Earlier this week, the 3^rd-5^th graders were treated to movie here at the library. It was Roald Dahl’s James and the Giant Peach. It’s the 50^th anniversary of the book’s publishing. (Sigh. I remember when that came out.)

It may be a little late, but I want to thank all our veterans who have served and are serving our county. Thank you! ...and Keep Thinking Libraries!

Behind My Desk… I’m back from the conference in Council Bluffs. This was one of the best conferences I have attended! I learned all sorts of things! I mentioned in my last article that I was going to attend a workshop on changing from the Dewey Decimal System. It was interesting to hear how other public libraries are doing this and how their patrons responded. It doesn’t happen overnight and takes much planning and patience. We just might try it here.

In a way, we’ve already started. Our adult music cd collection is sorted by category. Also, we integrated our mysteries upstairs into our regular fiction section. This seems to go against the theory, but I think it makes it easier to find authors who love to jump genres. The whole purpose for these changes is to make it easier for the patron to find things on the shelves when browsing.

Are you aware of the organization out of Decorah, IA called Seed Savers Exchange? I was able to go to a session given by the librarian from that group. I had no idea that this place existed so close to us! I was totally impressed with what they do there. If you are interested, have a look at their website at www.seedsavers.org

Finally, on the last day of the conference I listened to a wonderful speaker who was a pediatrician and during his medical education, he took a year off to get his Masters Degree in Library and Information Science. (Ok, I was impressed!) His talk was about early developmental skills in babies for reading. His patients are given a book at each checkup. He can evaluate a child in so many ways by just watching how a six month old child interacts with a book. He encourages the parents to read to the child on a daily basis. It is SO important. I cannot stress that enough.

Those were some of the highlights of my conference. Now I have to get back to work!

Did You Know…the Atlantic Public Library board has written bylaws that outline its operational procedures and are reviewed by the board at least every three years? The bylaws and other library policies can be found on the trustees’ page of the library website.

Behind My Desk… I’m just curious if anyone has some Atlantic public library history sitting around anywhere. Does anybody have some old board minutes hidden away in the attic somewhere? The library is sadly lacking a good many years of information. I don’t even have a list of former board members. I need to qualify that statement. I do from 1998 forward and the original board members but when you consider there has been a library since 1903, that’s quite a span of years. Also, there have been nine members on this board from the beginning, and that’s a lot of people being involved with the library over the years. If you have any information, I would be happy to talk with you.

Most of this week I will have attended the annual conference for the Iowa Library Association in Council Bluffs. As most people know in the western part of the state few conferences are held on this “side.” It’s a nice change. One of the pre-conference workshops is about the alternatives for the Dewey Decimal System. Some public libraries are moving to a more “bookstore” classification system. I have felt for a long time that although the Dewey system is a logical way of classification, it is also very complex. At various times in my career I have considered changing to a simpler system for public library patrons. I “chickened” out because it would be a huge task and all library personnel had to be willing to make the change. Also, I really wasn’t satisfied with the alternatives.

Anyway, it will be interesting to see what others are doing and how the public reacted to the changes.

Behind My Desk… I got the chance to visit the official dedication of the new Fontanelle Public Library. What a nice facility for those residents and neighbors! Cumberland is in the middle of a renovation and Lewis just broke ground for its new library. Griswold may be finally getting a chance to grow and expand, as well. Wow! It’s really nice to see our communities supporting these important institutions.

For those of you who have Kindles and have wanted to “checkout” a downloadable e-book from our WILBOR database, it’s now available! Just go to our webpage and click on the WILBOR link and find the Kindle link on the left hand side. Be sure you know your library card number! You’ll need that to login.

Just received a list of events that are happening here at the library in October! All sorts of fun activities are happening!

I also want to give you a bit of a “Heads Up” about the Friends of the Library Used Book Sale coming up November 18 and 19. Please do not bring any of your books until after November 8. As you can see in our Coming Events, the month of October will be busy; and we really don’t have the space to store used books for any length of time.

Behind My Desk… I need to mention about our part with the Iowa Workforce Development (IWD) service. I have very mixed feelings about what is happening with IWD. Of course, libraries are here to serve our patrons. But, I don’t like to be taken advantage of, either. Especially when state funds are cut to libraries, and we are expected to take on special responsibilities we are not trained or paid for.

The Atlantic Public Library was to be an ACCESS POINT for our IWD area. Unfortunately, the software did not work with our computer system. Somewhere, “they” were trying to find a “work-around” for our system, but it didn’t happened. Therefore, I decided that the Atlantic Public Library would not be an access point for our area. The toll-free number for the IWD is 800-562-4692. People are now being asked to go to Cass Co. Dept. of Human Services at 601 Walnut Street here in Atlantic.

I did add a link to the general Iowa Workforce Development site on our webpage under “Find Information.”

Just for your information--It is against the law for convicted child molesters to use any public library in the State of Iowa. That makes it tricky for someone who has that conviction and needs to find a job, don’t you think?

Speaking of assisting other agencies, the library is going “green” with tax forms this year. We will have individual forms & instruction booklets available for 1040, 1040A, & 1040EZ. However, any other forms needed will need to be photocopied (at 10 cents/page) out of the reproducible binders located near the photocopier. Just a reminder--that the IRS only sends out federal tax forms. State forms are no longer sent out and must be downloaded off the computer.

Just to add to the madness—Because some post offices are being closed, it has been suggested that libraries would be a perfect alternative to sell stamps.

I love the remark one librarian made, “Need some fries with that order?”

Behind My Desk… Time to get back into the “Fall” routine. Boy, that summer went fast!

The library is trying to get some things taken care of before the winter weather sets in. We are working on replacing some of our exterior metal doors. Metal tends to corrode and then we start having problems with the doors, so this is a good step before they get too bad. After they get taken care of, we’ll be working upstairs to repair some of the water damage from roof problems. It’s always something.

I’m hoping it won’t be much longer, and we will be replacing our telephone system, too.

The State Library of Iowa is no more. It is now called Iowa Library Services. I know. I know. Why the heck did they do that? Remember I mentioned way back last year that changes were coming for the library community in Iowa? It happened at the end of July.

I have a secret pleasure in watching the DesMoines office deal with this little fact. About ten years ago the “Regional” library offices had to change their names to Library Service Areas. That was a pain. Addresses had to be changed, letterheads had to be changed, companies that they did business with had to be informed…the list goes on. The State Library sat in their state office building and smugly looked on. Now it’s their turn…and Surprise! It’s a pain!

The Library Service Areas are now districts of the Iowa Library Services…it’s all together as one agency under the Department of Education. Library Services does not mean just public libraries. It includes academic (college, university, and community colleges), special (law, medical, company), and school libraries, as well. Why did this all come about? Money. I’m hoping this will stop some of the squabbling and put everyone on the same page. With the economy the way it is, I doubt that it will help; but I can hope, can’t I?

Behind My Desk… First of all, I need to make a correction about the Anita Public Library’s “kick off” program for the All Cass County Reads Events. It will be on Tuesday, September 13 from 12 noon to 1 p.m. Please note this.

Now, about a certain advertisement in our paper last week…Let me say first a tried and true saying: “You reap what you sow.” The bond issue in Carroll for the Carroll Public Library failed. It was a very high turnout. 78% of the voters marked NO on their ballot with 22% voting YES.

I could stop there, but I won’t. I’m going from my perspective as a library director. There is something to be said for community pride, but I would not have been happy to see something like that to promote a library issue. I have always felt that libraries were for everyone. All this did was to give off negative vibes and create hard feelings with neighboring communities. That one article may take years to recover from. (Some people may not care, but some will.)

I know that each community has its own “personality.” I also know that if you look for negative things in a community, you will find negative things-- Just as looking for positive things will find positive things.

The Pre-School Story Times will start back up in September with the theme: One World, Many Stories! Boys and girls ages 3 to 5 years are invited to attend either Wednesdays or Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. No need to pre-register, just show up! The 2011 dates are:

Did You Know… that there were 410 boys and girls registered for the Atlantic Summer Library Programs?

Behind My Desk… I mentioned in an earlier column that the Cass County Library Association is planning an “All Cass County Reads” set of programs starting this September. We have decided to read Driving to Clarinda by Rosanne Bachman. This will be our first year of trying something like this on a local level, so be patient with us! As of now, there will be five different programs dealing with this book. The first program will be a Library and Lunch Program at the Anita Public Library on Wednesday, Sept. 21 from 12 noon to 1 p.m. Roseanne will be the guest speaker that day! Extra copies of the book will be available at the host library the month prior and up to its event.

We know quite a few of you have already had a chance to read the book, so we are hoping for nice attendance at our events. Atlantic will have a program next spring in March. Griswold and Lewis will co-host the final program in May.

The Cass County Genealogical Society is sending out a request for Javelins for the following years to fill in their collection. They need 1996, 1997, 1999 and 2007 through 2011. Anyone wishing to donate a copy would be greatly appreciated.

The 2011 Summer Library Programs for Atlantic are officially done! What a summer! Thank you to all the parents and care-givers who brought their children to our programs and helped in any way.

I finished the State annual library report for this past fiscal year. There are ten sections to that thing, and every year “they” tweek it just a little bit. I did pretty well, though. It’s totally done online now. I still somehow manage to have my desk covered with paper! How does that happen????

Next week the State Fair starts. For those planning on going, have a great time and stay cool… and Keep Thinking Libraries!

Behind My Desk… As promised in my last column, I have the list of Iowa Goldfinch Award books for you this time.

Last week we received a new Sony ereader. Ereaders are tricky things. It’s a very personal item, and it can be daunting in how to use it. The giver was kind enough to include how-to-use instructions. As a result, we can send it to other homebound patrons to try out! This is a great opportunity for people who really enjoy reading to find out what one is like. One of the best things about an ereader, as I’ve noted before, is the capability to change the size of the print. (I love large print, AND the ereader is very light and easy to hold!) It can make a wonderful gift for someone for birthdays or Christmas or any special occasion.

The City Department Heads met for their monthly meeting last week. We were discussing various issues with the City Personnel Policy. I do enjoy meeting with this group. We all have such diverse backgrounds and experience, but as a whole we work very well together. We appreciate those differences and care very much about our work.

I want to remind our young people who are with the summer reading program that today is the last day to log books you have read for the summer and next week please turn in your log books to the downstairs checkout desk.

Don’t forget Dan Wardell’s show this coming Wednesday at 9:30 and then again at 10:30 a.m.!

It’s been a great summer, I hope you all enjoyed the various activities Julie organized. A special thank you to all the volunteers and staff who helped with the programs, too! Finally, to Julie, who works so hard every year to make the summer library programs the best ever…thank you. Great job!

I cannot believe we are wrapping up this summer, but dare I say it? School starts in less than a month!

Did You Know… that the Atlantic Public Library checked out 90,496 items from July 1, 2010 to June 30, 2011? By using the library, our patrons saved $1,326.990.45! Sounds like a bargain to me!

Behind My Desk… We have had plenty of busy days this summer at the library. I enjoy that. There’s an energy that fills the building. Now, I have to admit my tolerance of some energy is not as strong as it was years ago. When we have “munchkins” who want to play Tag or Hide and Seek or use the elevator like a carnival ride in the library, I tend to frown on that…I might even get a little loud about that. Parents, be warned.

I like to have a relaxed atmosphere in the library. I know that once upon a time libraries were very strict and very, very, very silent places; but that’s no way to use a library. I do expect common sense and courtesy. I don’t think that is too much to ask from anyone. Everyone makes mistakes, but working with the public is an eye-opening experience for a new staff member. But, I need to add that most of our patrons are patient and good-natured people. Thank you for that!

RAGBRAI is coming to town soon. (Almost sounds like the circus, doesn’t it? Ok, in many ways it will be!) In years past the library has been open for access to restrooms, cool rooms, and public access computers. This year the bikers will be coming in on Sunday. The library will be closed. The free access wifi will still be available in the parking lot, and most people now have mobile phones for communication, anyway.

Julie brought this to my attention. It sounds like great thing.

The Goldfinch Award is an award given by PreK-3rd grade students in the state of Iowa. This award was designed to encourage children to read more quality books, provide a positive dialogue about books, and give recognition to those who write books for children. To be eligible to vote students in the participating grades must read or have read to them five books off the list. Books are added to the list from student nominations and reviewed by Goldfinch Award committee members. The library has practically all of the books on the list. In my next column, I will list the titles for our readers. Julie has read all of them and loved them.

Behind My Desk… Julie tells me that registrations for the rest of the summer library programs are not full, so just show up! That’s cool! We have some great things coming up for July.

I’m at it again…I am cleaning my desk and office and am really trying to “down-size.” That is a real challenge! I was able to get rid of a bunch paper, so I can store more stuff. Does that sound just a little off-kilter to you, too? Oh, well. I’m trying.

It’s almost the end of the fiscal year for the library. That means I need to be ready for the next year starting July 1^st. It also means I need to finish up reports for the fiscal year ending on June 30^th. I’ve been working on next year’s things, but I just have this strange feeling I’m forgetting something important. I hate that.

We will have a new member for our July library board meeting. The Mayor has appointed Mike Waters for the position. We all hated to see Betty Trewet resign, but totally understand and appreciate all she has contributed to our library these last ten years.
