Did You Know…

The Genealogy Room has new hours!  They are: Monday-Friday, 10-12 and 1-4. You may also email them your request at casscgs@yahoo.com.

Behind My Desk…

I had my first board meeting last night.  (Another one of those firsts I mentioned last time.)  It’s hard to believe we’re already planning the budget for Fiscal Year 2014.  There was some good discussion and I think we have a very workable budget. Just as a reminder, these meetings are open to the public and you can also access the minutes on the library’s website on the Library Board of Trustees’ Page under the About Us section.

The bookshelves are up in what was the tween room downstairs and we have Steve Livengood to thank!  Steve was putting together the Veteran’s display when he noticed all the boxes sitting in the lobby.  When hearing they were bookshelves just waiting to be put together, he immediately offered his services.  He did a wonderful job, so be sure to check them out.  They were much needed.  The teen books were overflowing the shelves we had but now there is room to breathe! Thanks again, Steve.

Thanks also to the Friends group for the wonderful reception they gave Carole and I last Thursday.  There was a great turnout and I had the opportunity to meet lots of people from the Atlantic community.  It’s obvious how much this library means to Atlantic.  And the food.  If you went away hungry, you have only yourself to blame!

Speaking of food, I hope everyone has a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday!  Go ahead and eat too much.  It’s a tradition!

And be sure to keep Thinking Libraries!

Did You Know…

NoveList is here to help you find your next book?  This is my favorite database when I don’t know what to read next or if I’m trying to figure out the correct order for a series I’m reading.  The library subscribes to this database and you can access it right from the library’s homepage.  Check it out!

Behind My Desk…

It’s hard to believe this is already my fourth week here in Atlantic as your new library director.  Every day is a new learning experience and includes any number of “firsts”!  Including this, my first Think Library Column.  I’ve never had a column before, so I hope you’ll bear with me as I figure it all out!

I would first like to take this time to thank our Friends of the Atlantic Public Library for their hard work organizing the semi-annual book sale that was held November 2nd and 3rd.  From what I understand, they had more books donated for the event than ever before!  And from the full parking lot and the many people I saw leaving with sacks full of books, it was a great success!  Thanks again to those who worked and those who purchased books.

I would also like to send a big thanks to everyone who has welcomed me so warmly to this community, particularly Carole and the rest of the library staff.  You have made the settling in process so much easier!

Also, be sure to check out the display case in the main lobby this month.  Steve Livengood has filled the case with memorabilia in honor of Veteran’s Day and it includes local veteran’s history.  The display will run through the month of November.

And finally, I just want to say how excited I am to be here.  You have a wonderful library and I look forward to being a part of it.

So…Keep Thinking Libraries!

Did You Know… that the Atlantic Public Library checked out 939 items to the residents of Marne and Wiota in Fiscal Year 2012?
Behind My Desk…  Well, Meredith is now your new library director.  It's very overwhelming to come in to a new place and try to get a feeling for how things work here.  I've never been in this type of situation, either!  This is an interesting time for everyone.

Looks like autumn is definitely here.  I didn't expect the leaves to be so pretty this year, but haven't they been beautiful?

Meredith and I made the trip down to Griswold for the “All Cass Reads”/Library & Lunch program last week.  What a great turnout!  There were twenty-eight of us enjoying Roy Marshall's presentation including an intriguing recount of the “Zephyr bombing” in September of 1942.  Some of the attendees remembered hearing about that incident near Nodaway during WWII.  I hope that some of you will take the opportunity to go to Lewis on November 1st to hear a different presentation by Roy.  You will, also, have the opportunity to see the brand new Lewis Public Library!

This will be my last column.   Meredith has graciously accepted the challenge of continuing with it, and so you will be able to see a bit of “her world.”  At first, I wasn't particularly thrilled at trying to do a regular library column, but the board felt very strongly that it would be a good thing.  I'm not a great book reviewer, so I gave it a different shot.  I have to admit...I really kind of enjoy putting the column together every other week.  It's fun to relate things that are going on either at the library or in my mind!

Please, everyone, stay safe and Keep Thinking Libraries!

Did You Know… the Friends of the Atlantic Public Library will be having their semi-annual Used Book Sale on Friday & Saturday Nov. 2&3?  Members are invited to come from 9:30 a.m.  to 11 a.m. on Friday.  Then the public is invited to come from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and again on Saturday from 9:30 to noon!

Behind My Desk…  Just to let our local genealogists know--we should have the Heritage Quest and Ancestry.com databases back up and going.  We’re sorry for the problems, but all is well for a year.  These are very expensive--$2500 per year (gulp), so we hope we can continue to have them in the future.  We were very fortunate to have had these at the price we were paying for them (about $400 a year).  Well, that went away when the Iowa Library Services took over.  I’m not sure they even tried to negotiate a lesser price for Iowa libraries.

I had my last library board meeting as a director on Monday evening.  I am truly glad I was able to finish my career here in Atlantic.  The board has been a great support.   We worked together to make the Atlantic Public Library a source of pride for our town, county, community, and patrons.

Next Wednesday Oct. 17 is our first “All Cass County Reads” program with Roy Marshall at the Griswold Public Library from 12 noon to 1 p.m.  He has a new book published entitled Crystal Lake, a Three Picnic Day.  The Atlantic Public Library also has his book Villisca: the True Account of the Unsolved 1912 Mass Murder that Stunned the Nation.  The program should be an interesting discussion.  Be sure to bring your lunch!  Beverage and dessert will be provided.

Meredith Scherb, our new library director starts Oct. 15—stop by, and say “Hi!”   and…Keep Thinking Libraries!
