Did You Know…

The flowers planted around the library and in the pot next to the main door were purchased through funds from the David Williams Cass County Gardener’s Grant?  Thanks to Dottie Krogh, Karen Hirsch, and the kids who helped plant them!  They look great!

Behind My Desk…

The summer is flying by but there are still plenty of Summer Reading events to come!  One of the biggest this month is the return of the Dome Theater on July 17, from 2:00-7:40.  If you’ve been to the library in the past month, you’ve seen all the signs!  The program line-up is as follows:
          Dinosaur Prophecy: 2:00-2:30 & 2:30-3:00
          Cosmic Collision: 3:00-3:30
          Passport to the Universe: 3:30-4:00
          Microcosm: 4:00-4:30
          Night of the Titanic: 4:30-5:00 & 5:45-6:15
Pink Floyd Dark Side of the Moon: 6:15-7:00
          Sonic Vision: 7:00-7:40
We will not be taking signups this year.  It is on a first come, first serve basis.  Thank you to the Friends of the Library for sponsoring this event.

There is also a Gaming Night for 6th-8th graders from 7:30-9:00 that evening.  In addition to games, two Dome Theater programs have been reserved just for them.
          Pink Floyd, the Wall: 7:40-8:30
          Entranced: 8:30-9:00

Though it is a little ways out, I also wanted to mention an upcoming program.  On August 6 at 2:30, Leighton Christiansen, the Iowa DOT librarian, will be presenting a program entitled, “A Journey in Transportation: The Iowa Department of Transportation Centennial and Iowa Transportation Highlights.”  I’ve heard wonderful reviews from other libraries that have already had the program so please mark your calendars for this event!

Enjoy these warm, summer days and…Keep Thinking Libraries!

Did You Know…

If you have library materials on reserve, but will be out of town on summer vacation or otherwise unable to receive reserved items, you can defer them? Just log into the card catalog using your library card number and phone number and select the dates you will be gone.  Your reservation will be deferred until you are available.

Behind My Desk…

Fans of Young Adult (YA) fiction won’t have to dig through the regular fiction section to find titles anymore.  The YA books have been moved to their very own section.  They can now be found on the shelves where the Iowa books were and beneath the new books shelf.  Be sure to check it out!

We had great attendance for the Grout Museum’s science demonstration.  There were 112 attendees, to be exact.  The kids had a lot of fun learning about electricity and were eager to volunteer to experience a small electric shock!  They were also introduced to a tarantula and hissing cockroaches.  They were very excited about it.  Me? Not so much.  I was happy to keep my distance!  There was only one tarantula and I definitely saw it put back in its container.  I’m less certain about the cockroaches.  There were a lot more of them and I’m hoping none got away!

The fun will continue this coming Wednesday, June 26 at 11:00 as the Blank Park Zoo pays the library a visit to present their Dino Clues program.  Real live animals will be here!  All ages are welcome.  Please join us!

Also, a note about the Genealogical Society.  They are no longer keeping set hours.  If you show up and no one is there, phone numbers are listed on the door for some of the volunteers who would be happy to take your call!

It’s hard to believe July is almost here!  Where did June go?  Though it’s a little early, have a wonderful and safe Fourth of July holiday and…

Behind My Desk…

The 2013 summer reading program is officially underway!  The Kick-off Carnival was a huge success with over 300 attendees.  The weather was beautiful and we were able to hold it outdoors as planned.  I was inside serving popcorn but chatted with a number of excited kids who eagerly shared their favorite activities!  The bouncy house was very popular.  They also had the most amazing balloon creations.  Hats, swords, flowers, and animals!  Thanks to Julie, the volunteers, and presenters for all their hard work in making the carnival a success!

As fun as the carnival was, it was just the beginning!  Julie has put together a wonderful line-up this year.  Just in the next couple of weeks there is a balloon artist, grave witching, archaeology, and science experiments.  So be sure to check the calendar of events so you don’t miss out on anything.

Since summer began, the activity level at the library has certainly picked up, which is great.  There is a wonderful energy in the building!  But to ensure that everyone who comes to the library has a rewarding and enjoyable experience, appropriate library behavior is especially important.  If you need a reminder, the library’s behavior policy can be found on our website.  But if we can all remember to be respectful and courteous, it will be a great summer!

Happy early Father’s Day … Keep Thinking Libraries!

Behind My Desk…

It’s the summer of authors at the Atlantic Public Library!  Atlantic native and world traveler, Liberty Wickman, will be at the library on Wednesday, June 5th at 2:30 to share stories and pictures of her many travels abroad as well as sign her new book, “Feeding Elephants, Friends, and Parasites:  The Journey of a Nomad”.  Please join us!  I know I look forward to living vicariously through Liberty’s adventures!

The summer reading program is almost upon us, and it all starts with our Kick-off Carnival on Monday, June 3 from 3:00 to 6:00.  There will be activities both inside and outside the library so please note that the library parking lot will be closed off starting at 1:30.   The carnival should be a lot of fun, so please join us!

I’ve included the first week and a half of summer programs but we have a full schedule so keep checking back!  Also, be sure to stop in the library or call to register your child for the Read-At-Home Summer program which begins June 1st.  For those pre-school and kindergarten children that signed up at One Stop Registration, your log books are now available for pickup at the library.

Please also stop into the Children’s library and take a look at the new Dr. Seuss picture hanging up down there.  It was donated by the Browning Book Club in memory of Mary Paasch.

Summer is here but be sure to… Keep Thinking Libraries!
