Did You Know… The Atlantic Public Library is selling new library book bags for $3 each. Stop by, while the supply lasts!
Behind My Desk… Slowly, but surely, I’m working on library statistics. It seems like I just get something finished, and I find something else to add or correct. I’m getting too complicated for my own good. It’s always a challenge to use the numbers the best possible way to show the use of the library. Here’s a couple things I’ve picked out already. The library had well over 17,000 uses of public computers this past fiscal year. Ninety percent of all checkouts were made by residents of Cass County. I’m not surprised by either statistic. The library is a very busy place.
Normally, by this time, the State Library has sent out the annual survey and I would be trying to find the statistics they need for federal reports. That hasn’t happened yet. So, I’m playing this game with myself and trying to guess what the State will want on their forms.
Summer programs are almost over for this year. Wow! I can hardly believe we are very close to starting the dreaded “S” word (school). The library will be losing two our staff members when they head off to college in a few weeks, so we will need a couple new employees soon. Library applications and more information are available upstairs at the checkout desk. It’s not always easy finding a good library employee. I’ve had good experiences and some really bad ones in my career. If you have been in a position of hiring and firing employees, you know what I mean.
The last few days I have been working on the library website again. The world of the Internet is constantly evolving and there are always new things to find. Now that the summer programs are winding down, Julie wants to add some new things to our Children’s Page and to the Tween Page. I’m finding some really cool pages that other librarians have put together for their youth, and I am hoping to use some of their ideas for our pages.
The big oak tree on the east side of the library is getting a trim this week. This is no easy or small task and our weather lately has added to the challenge. This should help our building roof and gutters.
Don’t forget to enjoy the Cass County Fair, and…Keep Thinking Libraries!

Did You Know… The Atlantic Public Library has an online calendar of library events for the current month and the next month? Just go to www.atlantic.lib.ia.us and scroll down the left side of the page. The Library Calendar is under the Library Information heading.
Behind My Desk… Half way through the summer! It’s hard to believe that the library summer programs will be through at the end of the month. Whew!
For a couple of years now the Atlantic Public Library has been using a calling service for the first notice to patrons about overdue materials. It works pretty well…most of the time. If any of you have had the assignment to notify people about delinquent bills, you know this is not a fun task. Trying to word a message in a way that will not offend the patron and yet stern enough to get the message that we want to clear up this problem is very tricky. Our goal is simply to clear up the problem. It may be the library’s problem, but until we contact a patron, we cannot be sure.
This past Wednesday I spent the day in a committee meeting in Pleasant Hill. I am not (thankfully) on the committee, but I have a real vested interest in the results of what this committee decides. They are trying to reorganize the state library system. The legislature has given the Iowa libraries a mandate to come up with a new, sleeker system to assist our libraries. It will happen; but like everything else these days, we will all pay a price for it.
Well, we have started a new fiscal year. I’m still working on finishing up the last year. Considering (or maybe in spite of it) the weather we’ve had for the past year, we have been very busy.
Also, this past week the Cass County Library Association met in Griswold and
learned about some of the tech “gadgets” being used now. We got to see a Kindle, a Nook, an IPad, an Ipod, and few other toys that people are purchasing. Karen Burns, our Library Service Area Administrator was kind enough to give us the opportunity to see them and explain the differences and uses of each one. It was an interesting meeting.

Did You Know… we now have 20 new titles on Playaways? They are located upstairs next to the audio cd books. Check one out! You will need your own earphones, headphones, or earbuds to listen. The library has earbuds for sale at $2. Just ask at the upstairs checkout desk!
Behind My Desk… Transition Time! I’m finishing the fiscal year and getting started on the next fiscal year. For months now I’ve tried to get things prepared for next year, so it can be a smooth transition; and for the most part, it will be. It’s time to add the numbers and see how we did for the year. I know it’s been busier. Libraries are always needed more when times are tough and money is tight.
We’ve added a new service to our website at www.atlantic.lib.ia.us.
It’s called NewsBank, Inc. and has many different newspapers you are able to look at, such as: the Washington Post, the New York Times (and their Book Review, too!), the Omaha World Herald, the Chicago Tribune, AND the Atlantic News Telegraph! We are in famous company! The first page has a listing of what newspapers are available to look at. Take a little time to look around and see what you can find. It also has a searching tool, so if you know a name or keyword to help in your search, you can find past articles! I should warn you that this database doesn’t go back a great deal of time. Each newspaper has dates that are covered. Also, you will need your library card number to access this from home. That library card number gets more valuable every day!
I hope some of you have noticed in the fiction area that Janie and Diane have tried to work with some of the series. They have tried to put them in order and list the series inside the books. There are many to do, so be patient!
It looks like our boys and girls attending the library summer programs are having fun this summer! That’s great!

Did You Know… you have the ability to use our self check-out service on either floor? You will need to know your library patron number. Just ask at the checkout desk for that information.
Behind My Desk… Well, we’ve hit the ground running! Summer is here at the library! June 1st was a very busy day. We checked out well over 400 items that day. (Just in case you’re not sure, yep, that’s busy.)
Many a time I have heard myself and staff members, too, say; “I wish there was a way to show people that working in a library is no easy task.” Well, I asked Janie to make up a list of steps that it takes to take a book suggestion to a book on the library shelf. After she worked on a list, I put together a Power Point presentation that shows what is involved in the process. I will post this on the upstairs bulletin board after a few weeks of Summer Programming. Look for it. If I get really ambitious, I may make it into something for the webpage.
Another project I’ve been working on is putting together a fairly detailed building inventory for the City, the board and me. It’s not complete, but I’m making progress. This should help me and any director that comes after me to know what the library has and what we should be looking for in the future.
Can you believe it? The library addition is 13 years old…a teenager! Well, it’s a good idea to be anticipating needs and problems before they get too bad.
AND, as if that wasn’t enough, I started working with the library’s goals and objectives for the next three years. (It just kind of all goes together, really.) There are only three goals, but they are good ones.
1. The Atlantic Public Library facility will continue to be a “user friendly, secure, and esthetically pleasing environment for patrons and staff members alike.
2. All individuals who contact the Atlantic Public Library will receive quality service.
3. The collections at the Atlantic Public Library will be a reflection of patrons’ needs, interests, and concerns.
There. I think those are goals to shoot for. We’ll see what the board thinks next month.
Ok, I’m tired now.

Did You Know… that the library offers a fax service? Our fax number is 712-243-5011 and the cost is $1 per page incoming or outgoing.
Behind My Desk… First of all...I am so excited about a new project the library is starting! We will be digitizing our Atlantic newspapers! Thanks to a grant of $5000 from the Schildberg Foundation, funding from the state and the memorial money given in honor of Luther Gillet we are able to do $10,000 worth (or the first stage) of this project! Newspapers from 1876 through 1931 will be available for searching on the Internet. We will have a link on our library webpage to be able to search at home!
Our microfilm reader is getting older and parts are scarce. We’ve been considering how we wanted to continue—new reader or go to a new format. The library board decided on digitizing from our microfilm files. One of the aspects I find especially appealing is the fact that this database will be stored in another location. In case of a fire or other disaster, our newspaper collection would be safe for generations to come.
Now, let me say a special “Thank You!” to the Schildberg Foundation. The grant of $5,000 was the special push to get us going with this project. Thank you so much!
The board felt that this newspaper project was a perfect fit for the memorial money for Luther, too He loved this town and knew so much of the history. I think he would be pleased with the decision.
Second of all…we are creating a new collection this summer for our adult audio “readers.” We now have twenty new titles on “Playaways!” There are no cd’s to lose or scratch, no tapes to break, no downloads to mess with. For health reasons we are not including earbuds or earphones, but we do have $2 earbuds for purchase at the upstairs checkout desk. The Playaways will be checked out for four weeks just like a regular book. Also included is one AAA battery which needs to be installed when ready to play.
Finally…Have a great summer, and Keep Thinking Libraries!

Did You Know… that from July 1, 2009 to April 30, 2010 patrons of the Atlantic Public Library have saved $1,085,155.22 by checking out library materials rather than purchasing those materials?
Behind My Desk… First of all, I want to thank the Kiwanis Club of Atlantic for donating some special books for our children’s collection and the summer library programs. I was invited to a special presentation last week of these books to the public library, and I got to meet the subject of the book—Josh the Baby Otter! Josh helps tell the importance of water safety for young children. As a result of this, Julie is hoping to bring Josh back for a summer library program.
Speaking of the Summer Library Programs, Julie has put together quite the busy calendar for our youth starting June 1st with the Reading Program. Every year I try to emphasize the importance of reading in the summer. It improves those skills learned the year before in school and aids the student for the next school year. It does not have to be War and Peace (not that I wouldn’t recommend that work to some interested people!), but reading anything that is enjoyable is good.
When I was in school, I LOVED my Summer Weekly Reader! #1: It was mail for me…not my parents, not my sister—me! I read that thing the minute the mail came from cover to cover. I learned about Sherlock Holmes by reading one of his cases. I always wanted to see the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago because I read they had a train “inside the building!”
I will admit that things were different then, but the world has a lot to offer our young ones and reading is a wonderful way to explore it.
To Katelyn and Jessica—Congratulations on your graduation from the Atlantic High School! These two girls have worked at the library for just about a year now. All of us at the Atlantic Public Library want to wish you the very best in your future endeavors. I know there were times you were not thrilled with tasks you were assigned, but you needed to have those experiences, too! Both of these young women plan on attending college in the fall. Jess has been accepted at Iowa State University in Ames and Katelyn will be attending Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville, Mo.
Congratulations to all graduates, and Keep Thinking Libraries!

Did You Know… that upstairs at the library there is a repository for used ink cartridges? The library has partnered with the Scouts on this little project for a couple years! Unfortunately, they do not want Epson cartridges, but HP and Brother cartridges are just fine.
Behind My Desk… For those of you who have been frustrated with our Public Use Copier in the last few months—we have a new one! Our last one did a fine job for many years, but it had seen better days. I’m hoping this one will be easy to use for people. It still copies 8.5 x 11, 8.5 x 14, and 11 x 17. It can also copy both sides of something. I’m always amazed at that. I know. I have no life, but I do think that was a smart idea by someone.
How did we get through four months of this year already? Well, half of that or more we were buried under snow. One day seemed like all the rest. It’s so nice to see green.
Spring cleaning is continuing in my office. The place looks better, but I know I have a lot of sorting to do and deciding how long to retain some files. This is the important part of the cleaning process.
Dan Wardell is coming to the Atlantic Public Library again this May 14 from 6-7 p.m. to promote our new PBS Kids Raising Readers Library Corner! We have partnered with Iowa Public Television to help with early childhood literacy. Dan was here this past week and gave us a nice big IPTV area rug to use in our Children’s Room along with some TALL posters promoting the new corner. We had to work some magic and cut them to fit our very low ceilings in the kids’ area!
