Behind My Desk… Slowly, but surely, I’m working on library statistics. It seems like I just get something finished, and I find something else to add or correct. I’m getting too complicated for my own good. It’s always a challenge to use the numbers the best possible way to show the use of the library. Here’s a couple things I’ve picked out already. The library had well over 17,000 uses of public computers this past fiscal year. Ninety percent of all checkouts were made by residents of Cass County. I’m not surprised by either statistic. The library is a very busy place.
Normally, by this time, the State Library has sent out the annual survey and I would be trying to find the statistics they need for federal reports. That hasn’t happened yet. So, I’m playing this game with myself and trying to guess what the State will want on their forms.
Summer programs are almost over for this year. Wow! I can hardly believe we are very close to starting the dreaded “S” word (school). The library will be losing two our staff members when they head off to college in a few weeks, so we will need a couple new employees soon. Library applications and more information are available upstairs at the checkout desk. It’s not always easy finding a good library employee. I’ve had good experiences and some really bad ones in my career. If you have been in a position of hiring and firing employees, you know what I mean.
The last few days I have been working on the library website again. The world of the Internet is constantly evolving and there are always new things to find. Now that the summer programs are winding down, Julie wants to add some new things to our Children’s Page and to the Tween Page. I’m finding some really cool pages that other librarians have put together for their youth, and I am hoping to use some of their ideas for our pages.
The big oak tree on the east side of the library is getting a trim this week. This is no easy or small task and our weather lately has added to the challenge. This should help our building roof and gutters.

Behind My Desk… Half way through the summer! It’s hard to believe that the library summer programs will be through at the end of the month. Whew!
For a couple of years now the Atlantic Public Library has been using a calling service for the first notice to patrons about overdue materials. It works pretty well…most of the time. If any of you have had the assignment to notify people about delinquent bills, you know this is not a fun task. Trying to word a message in a way that will not offend the patron and yet stern enough to get the message that we want to clear up this problem is very tricky. Our goal is simply to clear up the problem. It may be the library’s problem, but until we contact a patron, we cannot be sure.
This past Wednesday I spent the day in a committee meeting in Pleasant Hill. I am not (thankfully) on the committee, but I have a real vested interest in the results of what this committee decides. They are trying to reorganize the state library system. The legislature has given the Iowa libraries a mandate to come up with a new, sleeker system to assist our libraries. It will happen; but like everything else these days, we will all pay a price for it.
Well, we have started a new fiscal year. I’m still working on finishing up the last year. Considering (or maybe in spite of it) the weather we’ve had for the past year, we have been very busy.
Also, this past week the Cass County Library Association met in Griswold and
learned about some of the tech “gadgets” being used now. We got to see a Kindle, a Nook, an IPad, an Ipod, and few other toys that people are purchasing. Karen Burns, our Library Service Area Administrator was kind enough to give us the opportunity to see them and explain the differences and uses of each one. It was an interesting meeting.
