Did You Know… that the library offers a fax service? Our fax number is 712-243-5011 and the cost is $1 per page incoming or outgoing.
Behind My Desk… First of all...I am so excited about a new project the library is starting! We will be digitizing our Atlantic newspapers! Thanks to a grant of $5000 from the Schildberg Foundation, funding from the state and the memorial money given in honor of Luther Gillet we are able to do $10,000 worth (or the first stage) of this project! Newspapers from 1876 through 1931 will be available for searching on the Internet. We will have a link on our library webpage to be able to search at home!
Our microfilm reader is getting older and parts are scarce. We’ve been considering how we wanted to continue—new reader or go to a new format. The library board decided on digitizing from our microfilm files. One of the aspects I find especially appealing is the fact that this database will be stored in another location. In case of a fire or other disaster, our newspaper collection would be safe for generations to come.
Now, let me say a special “Thank You!” to the Schildberg Foundation. The grant of $5,000 was the special push to get us going with this project. Thank you so much!
The board felt that this newspaper project was a perfect fit for the memorial money for Luther, too He loved this town and knew so much of the history. I think he would be pleased with the decision.
Second of all…we are creating a new collection this summer for our adult audio “readers.” We now have twenty new titles on “Playaways!” There are no cd’s to lose or scratch, no tapes to break, no downloads to mess with. For health reasons we are not including earbuds or earphones, but we do have $2 earbuds for purchase at the upstairs checkout desk. The Playaways will be checked out for four weeks just like a regular book. Also included is one AAA battery which needs to be installed when ready to play.
Finally…Have a great summer, and Keep Thinking Libraries!
