Did You
Know…
Public Libraries are busier than ever! According to the Institute of Museum &
Library Service’s 2010 Public Library Survey, public libraries provided 3.75
MILLION programs and circulated 2.46 BILLION items in FY10!
Behind My
Desk…
There is certainly a lot going on in the
children’s department this month. We’ll
be having an author visit on Tuesday, February 12 from 5:00-5:45 for first and
second graders, featuring Iowa author Matthew Meyer. He will be reading his book, Raising
Hare. Parents and older siblings are
also welcome to attend. Please join us!
The library has also teamed up with the YMCA
to sponsor a new children’s program.
“March Into Reading” is an after school reading support program for
kindergarten through third grade students that will be held on Tuesdays from
3:30-4:30 on February 26, March 5, 12, and 26 at the YMCA. There is no cost to participate. For more information or to enroll your child,
contact Tamara Gibson at 243-3934 or Julie Tjepkes at 243-5466, ext 1. The program is also in need of volunteers to
listen to the kids read, so if you have any interest, please contact Tamara or
Julie for that as well.
I’m also pleased to announce the Atlantic
Public Library has access to a new database, the Learning Express Library. Learning Express Library is an interactive
online learning platform featuring over 770 practice tests, tutorials, and
eBooks related to job search and workplace skills improvement, career certification
and licensing exam preparation, college entrance and graduate school admissions
exam preparation, GED exam preparation, and basic skills improvement in
reading, writing, and math, for all ages.
To access this resource, head to our homepage
and click on “Search Library Collection/Account Login”. Login with your card number (call us if you
need it) and phone number. Then just
scroll to the bottom of the page and click on the Learning Express icon. It’s the one with the light bulb!
I hope everyone survived the snow and subzero
temperatures these past few days! Stay
warm and keep…Thinking Libraries!
