Did You Know… that upstairs at the library there is a repository for used ink cartridges? The library has partnered with the Scouts on this little project for a couple years! Unfortunately, they do not want Epson cartridges, but HP and Brother cartridges are just fine.
Behind My Desk… For those of you who have been frustrated with our Public Use Copier in the last few months—we have a new one! Our last one did a fine job for many years, but it had seen better days. I’m hoping this one will be easy to use for people. It still copies 8.5 x 11, 8.5 x 14, and 11 x 17. It can also copy both sides of something. I’m always amazed at that. I know. I have no life, but I do think that was a smart idea by someone.
How did we get through four months of this year already? Well, half of that or more we were buried under snow. One day seemed like all the rest. It’s so nice to see green.
Spring cleaning is continuing in my office. The place looks better, but I know I have a lot of sorting to do and deciding how long to retain some files. This is the important part of the cleaning process.
Dan Wardell is coming to the Atlantic Public Library again this May 14 from 6-7 p.m. to promote our new PBS Kids Raising Readers Library Corner! We have partnered with Iowa Public Television to help with early childhood literacy. Dan was here this past week and gave us a nice big IPTV area rug to use in our Children’s Room along with some TALL posters promoting the new corner. We had to work some magic and cut them to fit our very low ceilings in the kids’ area!

Check our online calendar to see if there is an addition!
Did You Know… every time you click on to the library homepage, you will see a different set of five new books that the library now has available for checkout? It’s part of a site called “Library Thing.” Each month I add our new books to this list. At the end of six months, I take them off the list. It doesn’t mean the library no longer owns the title, they are just not considered “new” any more. It keeps the list fresh and interesting.
Behind My Desk… Well, better late than never. This week is National Library Week! I hope that in some small way you celebrate libraries throughout the year. Just a little bit of trivia for you. Iowa ranks 11th in the nation for library visits. Iowans average 6.27 visits compared to the national average of 4.91. Since 1999, library visits to Iowa public libraries increased 41 per cent. We must be doing something right! The Atlantic Public Library averages well over 300 people through our doors every day.
Did you get a chance to try the Scavenger Hunt I tried to put together for Library Week? Facebook fans got a head start on the list last week. A few of them might have been a little tricky. If you got the first 10 completed, I hope you stopped by the library and picked up your “prize.” Go ahead and give it a try! I’ll let you get the prize even if the date has passed!
Also, last week, I tried to do a little spring cleaning in my office. It seems I’ve become the depository for everything that doesn’t have a home. Everyone has that place in a house where something gets put when you don’t know if you might need the fool thing again. I haven’t helped the situation. I’ve added my share of “what do I do with….” I started by trying to clear my desk. Well, you and I both know that I just put things in a different spot and didn’t do anything except make another pile larger, but my desk looked nicer! I must admit I did make things better. The trash can was quite full when I finished that day!
Next week on April 22 you can celebrate Earth Day! Our upstairs bulletin board has all sorts of information about our Landfill Site and Yard Waste Site. We really need to take advantage of these important sources in our community!
Keep Celebrating, and Thinking Libraries!

Did You Know… that the Atlantic Public Library is available for proctoring tests?
Behind My Desk… Notice something new in the lobby of the library? For the next few weeks there will be someone to answer Census questions for anyone who is having a problem filling out the form or by some strange accident did not receive a form. (Hey, it happens! I wasn’t counted in 1970. I was in college and somehow I never got one!) There are just certain hours when this resource person will be here, so be sure to note the times! Oh, by the way, if you don’t fill the form out; you will receive a visit by a Census person and that person will fill it out for you.
In my last article I had the list for Iowa Teen Awards. Now, I have the longer list of Iowa Children’s Choice Awards 2010-11. These can be found downstairs at the library, too!

Mar. 24/25: “Make a Splash!”
Did You Know… that in FY09 (July 2008-June 2009) Iowans checked out 28.7 million items from public libraries?
Behind My Desk… It’s been one very long winter. As Iowans, we also know that it may not be through with us yet. People are tired of the gloomy days. They are tired of lots of things and that just comes with the territory. Just to acknowledge the fact that, yes, I’m very aware that our parking lot seems to be full most days. Some of that was due to the abundance of snow. Some of that was to staff members having to use the regular parking lot. Some days our meeting room is being used for census training and ICN classes and meetings. The parking lot is a shared venture with the library (which means it is part of the City of Atlantic’s public parking) and the church next door to us. When the new addition to the library was proposed in the 1990’s, an agreement was set in place to allow parking for special church events such as funerals by its parishioners and that has happened as well. Here’s another reason…the library is busy! We have wifi and approximately thirteen public access computers. We also have library programs! Because of the times and to save some money, more people are using our collections. I’m not trying to dismiss those people who have tried to find a parking space and it was full. I’m just saying this is what we want, isn’t it…a vital, busy part of the community? I know; it’s still very irritating to find the whole lot full when you need a parking space.
Ok, Julie, here you go: This is a list of the Iowa Teen Award Books for 2010-11 and are located in the “Tween” section on the lower library level.

Did You Know… you can now use the self checkout stations both upstairs and downstairs if you are in a hurry?
Behind My Desk… There are lots and lots of trainings going on for the 2010 Census takers. The Atlantic Public Library is partnering with the Census office to supply a place for the training. I encourage everyone to fill out those forms when you receive them and send them back in. Those numbers can help libraries, too!
Just a little information for you: the Atlantic Public Library is in the middle of installing security cameras. When the project is finished, we will have cameras on both levels and on the outside, as well. It’s already helped to catch some “sticky fingers.” It’s called stealing, folks, and I don’t like it any better than most of you. I am hoping to have one of the outside cameras “live” on our webpage, so people can check out what’s going on at the library 24/7!
We’ve started another project, too! We are planning to digitize our past issues of the Atlantic newspapers. What this means is that we will transfer the microfilmed newspapers to CDs to be able to search on a computer. They start in the 1870’s and come all the way to the present. This is an expensive undertaking (approximately $24,000), so we have invited the Atlantic News Telegraph and the Cass County Genealogical Society to help partner the project. We are looking at grants and gifts as well. Our late library board member Luther Gillett was especially interesting in Atlantic history, so the Library Board has decided to name this project as a memorial to him. All contributions are welcome!
I just got back from spending a day in Des Moines talking to our legislators about library issues. This legislative session has been and will be historic, I think, in its reorganization of state government. It’s even hit the libraries and some very “hot” issues have given us some things to rethink and reorganize. By the way, don’t ever believe librarians are meek and mild! Passionate for what we believe in is a very apt description. Dealing with librarians who are upset over an issue near and dear to their hearts is an area some should think twice before attempting and may learn to regret.
Don’t forget that Daylight Savings Time begins on March 14! You have a week to prepare. It’s also time to change the batteries in you smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors.

Did You Know… that the Atlantic Public Library does have some of the federal tax forms for you to use. Others can be found on the irs.gov website.
Behind My Desk… I could really use some fans of the library page on Facebook. There is a direct link on the library webpage at www.atlantic.lib.ia.us. This is a way to stay informed about programs and special things going on at the Atlantic Public Library.
Right now at the library Janie has set up a display of books on cooking—fiction and non-fiction entitled “Let’s Get Cookin’!” When you check on of those on display, you should find a bookmark in the form of a recipe card! It’s yours to keep!
I should have done this years ago, but I’m just getting around to it now. I’m making a list of the things I’ve learned as a public library director that I had no idea was included in the job description. Here is a start:
1. What to do if the ceiling starts leaking.
2. Who to call if you find a bat, snake, ugly insect or spider in the library. (therein lies a tale or two…)
3. Landscaping issues (this can include tree and bush trimming, to parking lot spaces, to sidewalk replacement, to planting bulbs).
4. When to close the library for inclement weather.
5. Lobbying for legislative issues.
6. Scheduling meeting room space
7. Keeping patrons and staff happy when computers do dumb things.
8. What to do for a library board meeting.
9. How to negotiate with city government about budget issues.
10. What to do when you have kids making “crank” phone calls to the library.
I’ll stop for now with ten and most of these I’ve had to do in the last couple weeks! There are a lot of issues that come with the job and need spur of the moment decisions and judgments. Sometimes I do well; and sometimes at least I try! Life is never dull at the library. It changes from day to day. I try to have an agenda for the day when I go to work, but quite often that agenda has to go away so I can cope with something else. I’m sure that sounds familiar to lots of people!
I want to make a special welcome to Dee Bebensee who is our newest library board member and Cathy Somers who is our City Council/Library liaison! We are glad to have you with us!
Have a good couple weeks…and Keep On Thinking Libraries!
