Behind My Desk…

My week started with a mysterious leak in the ceiling of the Children’s Library.  Interestingly, it had nothing to do with all the rain.  And thankfully, it was nothing major.  Just a sweaty pipe in need of some insulation.  Who knew I would learn so much about building maintenance from working in a library?!

The Friends of the Library Book Sale is this week, Friday, April 19th and Saturday, April 20th.  I know I mentioned it in my last column but there are a LOT of books and I know the Friends would like to sell as many as possible so please come out!  Prices are in the quarter to fifty cent range, which really can’t be beat.

The money raised from the sale is given back to the library which allows us to provide services and complete special projects we might not otherwise be able to do.  It’s a wonderful group of volunteers and if you are interested in helping out the library  or meeting new people, I would encourage you to join.  Annual dues are just $10.00.  You can find the membership form on our website.  From the home page, click on “About Us”, and then “Join Friends of the Atlantic Library”.

The Cass County Genealogical Society also asked me to mention their upcoming program.  Dennis Sasse, a member of the Sons of the Union Army, will do a presentation at 1:00 at their April 25th meeting here at the library.  The public is encouraged to attend.

I know it’s been cloudy recently, but keep looking for sunshine and … Keep Thinking Libraries!

Behind My Desk…

If you’ve downloaded any ebooks or audiobooks from WILBOR recently, you’ve probably noticed some changes!  WILBOR has gotten a facelift!  I’ve played around with it myself the past few days, and it does seem a lot easier to navigate the site.  I also really like the new OverDrive Read feature.  OverDrive Read provides instant access to Ebooks without installing additional software or downloading any files.  All you need is a computer or device with a modern web browser.  The only hitch? Not every title has the Overdrive Read feature.  It can’t be too easy, now can it?  Play around with it.  And feel free to call us with questions.

April 14 -20 is National Library Week, and we have several events planned.  On Tuesday, April 16 at 10:30 WWII Navy veteran, Clarence Pfundheller, a native of Greenfield, IA, will share his experiences of being on the USS Maryland when Japanese planes attacked Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941.  This promises to be a fascinating program and I hope you’ll be able to join us!

The Friends of the Library will also be holding their book sale during National Library Week.  This spring’s sale will be held on Friday, April 19 from 11:30-5:30 and Saturday, April 20 from 9:30-12:00.  The Friend’s have collected a lot of books, but be sure to come early for the best selection!

Whatever format you prefer, I hope you find some good books this week and be sure to … Keep Thinking Libraries!
