Did You Know…

From July 1, 2012 to June 30, 2013, library patrons saved $1,172,371.98 by checking materials out from the library instead of purchasing them?

Behind My Desk…

I’ll remind you again about the Friends of the Atlantic Public Library’s upcoming book sale Friday, November 1st, 11:00-5:00, and Saturday, November 2nd, 9:30-12:00.  The meeting room is filling up with books and they’ll be sold at bargain prices, so be sure to check it out.

And if you’ve been thinking of joining the Friends group, the book sale would be the perfect time.  It’s a wonderful group of volunteers and annual dues are just $10.00.   You can find the membership form on our website.  From the home page, click on “About Us”, and then “Join Friends of the Atlantic Library”.

A few columns ago, I mentioned the newly updated Learning Express database, Learning Express 3.0.  The link to this new version has been added to our website, and is now available for your use.  If you are already registered on Learning Express 2.0, you will need to re-register with Learning Express 3.0 and the classes, tests, and eBooks you’ve downloaded will not carry over.  However, Learning Express 2.0 will be available until next July which should allow plenty of time to complete any tests or courses you’ve already begun.

I also wish to extend a big thank you to the Atlantic high school students who came to the library on October 16th for their Service Learning Day.  They worked very hard all morning on the landscaping around the library building.  It looks great!  Thanks also to Dottie Krogh who arranged for the students to come and oversaw their fine work.

Have a happy Halloween and … keep thinking libraries!

Did You Know…

WILBOR now has a renewal option?  Users will be able to renew a borrowed title if no other users are on hold for that title. The renew option becomes available on a user's Bookshelf three days before the title is scheduled to expire. Users may only renew a title one time.

Behind My Desk…

It’s coming!  The semi-annual Friends of the Library book sale will be held on Friday, November 1st, 11:00-5:00 and Saturday, November 2nd, 9:30-12:00.  If you have books to donate, now is the time to bring them in, but there are a few things to keep in mind.  Please no textbooks or encyclopedias.  Please also consider the condition of the book before donating it.  Nothing dirty, musty, or moldy.  Once again, there will be a lot of books for sale but you will want to come early for the best selection!

I know this may be hard to believe but planning is already underway for next year’s Summer Reading Program.  This year’s theme for elementary age students is “Fizz, Boom, Read” and for teenagers it is “Spark a Reaction”.  I don’t know about you but I sense an overall science theme!   Julie will be attending a workshop on the 29th and I’m sure she’ll leave with lots of ideas for fun events and activities for next summer!

We have a display of young adult and teen books upstairs in honor of Teen Read Week, October 13-19, but I would encourage all you adults to consider trying one, too.  Some of the best writing is happening in young adult fiction these days.  I know I’m a fan.  Give it try.  You might like it!

I’d also like to remind anyone who missed our first meeting that “Booked for Lunch” returns on October 22nd at 12:30.  Bring your lunch and come talk about the books you’ve been reading.  It’s a good time!  I promise!

Enjoy this fall weather and … Keep thinking libraries!

Did You Know…

Library patrons can access national and regional newspapers for free on Newsbank, including the Atlantic News Telegraph, right from our homepage? All you need to login is your patron number.  Contact the library if you need yours!

Behind My Desk…

Back in March, I wrote about the Cass County Soil & Water Conservation 2013 Poster contest for K-12 graders and winners have now been announced.  Bryan York was the Division 2, Region 5 winner, Katie York, the Division 3, Region 5 winner, and Danyelle Foresman, sponsored through the library, was the Division 4, Region 5 winner.  Congratulations to all!

Learning Express 3.0 is being updated with a new interface and other upgrades!  Learning Express 3.0 is a database that contains hundreds of career and academic-oriented courses and practice tests online. Iowans have access to free, unlimited, interactive skill-building courses in math, reading, writing, along with tutorials on Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint. Students can access practice tests such as the ACT, SAT, and GED. Job seekers can access occupational tests for firefighters, police officers, paramedics, real estate agents, and many more.

If you are already registered on Learning Express 2.0, you will need to re-register with Learning Express 3.0.  The classes, tests, and eBooks you’ve downloaded will not carry over.  However, Learning Express 2.0 will still be available for several months, allowing time to complete any tests or courses already begun.

I’ve had a chance to see the new Learning Express and I think it’s a great improvement over 2.0.  It’s much more streamlined and user-friendly.  I will add the 3.0 icon to our website as soon as it is available.  Stay tuned!

Don’t forget, fall storytime has begun!  The next sessions are this Monday, September 30 and Tuesday, October 1 at 10:00.

Enjoy these fall days and … Keep thinking libraries!
