Behind My Desk…

I’m very excited to tell you about an upcoming library event.  On Wednesday, May 22 from 5:00 to 7:00, the library is hosting a Local Authors Event.  This is a chance to meet with local and area authors to talk about their work and maybe even purchase a book and get it signed!  The authors scheduled to appear are: John Fleming, Lila Hoogeveen & Shiona Putnam, Roy Marshall, Floyd Pearce, Kerry Sauser, Kimberlee & Frank Spillers, and Allen Stark.  The Friends of the Library are providing refreshments.  Food and books and writers.  What could be better?!  I hope to see you there!

The library has seen many little visitors the past two weeks, as preschool classes from around Atlantic were given the grand library tour.  In addition to the tour, the preschoolers each got to check out a book.  Hopefully, these eager youngsters will become the next generation of lifelong library users!

My thanks go out to two of our volunteers, Dottie Krogh and Karen Hirsch, who have been working on the library’s landscaping this week.  Things are looking good out there and I greatly appreciate all their hard work!

I think it’s finally warm to stay…or at least I’ve decided it is because I’ve turned off the boilers for the season!  I can’t believe I had to wait until May!

Now that it’s warm, stay cool and … Keep Thinking Libraries!

Behind My Desk…

Story time is on a temporary break for the month of May as we gear up for the Summer Reading Program.  It will resume on Mondays from 10:00-11:00 beginning in June.  See above for dates and themes!

To register for the Library’s Summer Reading programs, be sure to stop at the Washington School Gym on May 13 & 14 between 5:00 & 7:00.  It’s a good opportunity to register for other summer activities and programs as well!

Now is also the time to sign-up for “Reading Rocks”, a summer vacation reading support program, sponsored by the Atlantic Library and the Atlantic BPO Does.  This free program is for students going into 1st-3rd grades and will be held on Thursdays from 11:00-12:00 on June 6, 13, 20, and 27.   For more information or to enroll your child, contact Julie or Kayla at 243-5466, ext. 1.

A big thank you goes out to the Friends of the Atlantic Library for all their hard work on last week’s book sale!  It was a huge success and many books found new homes.  Thanks also to everyone who donated books, bought books and to those who joined or renewed their Friend’s membership.

I also wanted to thank Clarence Pfundheller for speaking about his Pearl Harbor experience. We had a wonderful turnout with over thirty people attending.  Thanks to Clarence for sharing his story and for his service to our country.

We’ve also been busy shifting some books around.  The Large Print Westerns, Large Print Mysteries, and the Iowa section have moved.  So if you’re looking for something in those areas, just ask and we’ll direct you to their new locations!

The sun is finally shining and temperatures are rising!  Keep thinking warm and … Keep Thinking Libraries!
