Did You Know… that it costs the library about $2.70 to send a regular sized novel through the mail one way and the library charges $1.25 to the patron to help with return postage. Do you believe that postage charges are going down? Neither do we. As of January 1, 2010, the Atlantic Public Library will be increasing the return postage fee to $2 per item.

Behind My Desk… I just got back from the Iowa Library Association Annual Conference in Des Moines. There was lots of talk about State funding cuts to the State Library and the Iowa Library Service Areas. I understand the need, but services will be cut. We’ll just wait and see what happens.

Another big interest item was using Facebook and Twitter for libraries to promote services. It would reach another group of people that don’t necessarily “think library” first thing. One of these days…the Atlantic Public Library will have another presence on the web.

A couple weeks ago I hosted a library tour for a group of women from Wiota. I thoroughly enjoy showing them what the Atlantic Public Library has to offer everyone. I think they enjoyed the time, too. If you have a group that would like a tour of the library, please give me a call at 243-5466 and ask for Carole.

Another thing about the ILA Conference…I did my presentation for one of the sessions on county-wide library collaboration. It went pretty well, and I learned a great deal from other groups. I think that’s what I like best about the conference. I found new ideas and new friends, too!

And another happy note, I want to send my best wishes to our former staff member Christin Casteel and her fiancé Christopher Blume on their wedding next Saturday. I know it will be a very special time for both of you and your families.

…Keep Thinking Libraries!
