Did You Know… the Atlantic Public Library has an online events Calendar?  www.atlantic.lib.ia.us/calendar.htm

Behind My Desk…  I slipped in the news about the new library director in my last column.  That was a last minute announcement I wanted you to know about.  I truly think Meredith will be terrific for the library.   She is originally from Spencer and received her Bachelor’s Degree in Business/Finance and just recently received her Master’s Degree in Library/Information Science from the University of IA.

Because this will be a year of transition for Meredith and the Atlantic Public Library, the Griswold Public Library has graciously allowed Atlantic to co-partner with them to host the first All Cass County Reads program for the season!  This year we are focusing in on a local author Roy Marshall.  He has published several books which I’m sure you are familiar with including:

  • Villisca—the Villisca axe murders
  • The Detectives—companion to Villisca about the detectives who worked the case. (out-of-print)
  • The Interrogation of Reverend Kelley—another companion to Villisca has the complete all-night interrogation which led to his confession. (out-of-print)
  • Alix, Queen of the Turf—famous harness racing trotter stabled in Red Oak during the 1890’s. (out-of-print)
  • What Could be Grander?—History of Viking Lake.
  • Southwest Iowa’s Greatest Recipes—fundraiser for Lewis Public Library (Lewis Library may have copies)
  • Crystal Lake—History behind Cold Springs State Park

The first program will be on Wednesday, Oct. 17 at the Griswold Library from 12 noon to 1 p.m.  (It’s part of their regular Library & Lunch programs)  You’ll need to bring your own lunch.  We (the libraries)  will furnish drink & dessert!  Please join us!  You will also get a chance to meet Meredith at that time, too.

Finally, I hope you have had an opportunity to take a look at the display in the entry these last couple weeks.  Kathleen Gray donated some items for our celebration of our Constitution!

Get Ready for a Very Busy October and…Keep Thinking Libraries!
