Did You Know…

The library has an online auto repair database?  Chilton’s Library provides authoritative automotive repair, maintenance and service information on seven decades of vehicles, updated monthly.

Behind My Desk…

March has certainly lived up to its reputation as a weather roller coaster!  A winter storm, then temps in the 50’s, and now more snow is in the forecast.  You’ve got to love living in Iowa!

Fortunately, the weather cooperated for Iowa Legislative Day in Des Moines a couple of weeks ago.  I, along with a couple of other Cass County librarians, joined librarians from across the state who made the trek to the State Capitol building to meet with local legislators and talk to them about the importance of libraries to our communities and the importance of funding for the State Library.  Like many government agencies, funding for the State Library has been cut in recent years.  We, as librarians, hope that some of that funding can be restored this year.

So how does our library benefit from these funds that go to the State Library?  Well, if you’ve ever downloaded an e-book or audiobook from WILBOR, or borrowed a book from another library through inter-library loan, or used a database like Novelist or LearningExpress, you’ve utilized a service the State Library supports.  The Atlantic Library also receives Direct State Aid which are additional funds we can use to provide additional services through things like collection development, programming or new technologies that we might not otherwise be able to do.

The reception was well-attended by both librarians and legislators.  The legislators seemed receptive, and hopefully our being there will make an impact and lead to an increase in funding for the State Library.

Spring is coming (really) and Keep Thinking Libraries!
