Did You Know… the Atlantic Public Library is the home for the Cass County Genealogical Society?  These members are the ones who help with questions about family trees!

Behind My Desk… It broke my heart to see the damage caused by the tornado that ripped through the northwest part of Creston a couple weeks ago.  I knew many of the people that had homes in the area and recognized buildings (or what was left of buildings) that were damaged.  I couldn’t believe the AEA building, and the new portion of the hospital.  Most people were very fortunate, but a few sustained critical and serious injuries.  It’s one of the down sides to living in tornado alley.

Summer is just around the corner, and Julie is starting to “gear up” for her library programs.  I’ll have more information about events and schedules in my May “Think Library” columns.  Plan on registering for library programs on May 15 or 16 from 5-7 p.m. in the Washington School Gym.  It’s a perfect time to register for all sorts of summer activities at the same time.

Also, don’t forget about our last All Cass County Reads program scheduled for Saturday, May 12 from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at the Griswold Public Library.   The Lewis Public Library will be co-hosting with Griswold for this event.  May is National Mental Health Month, and Driving to Clarinda has a special message about mental illness.  If you haven’t had the chance to read the book, I do recommend it; and Rosanne will be there to talk about her experiences.

For a few weeks now, I have been trying to set up report forms for next year.  I create most of my own forms with the aid of Excel spreadsheets.  I have tried to anticipate what library board members need to know as well as what they want to know, and there is a lot to know!  Those reports are just the tip of the iceberg.  I have to set up spreadsheets for those spreadsheets!  It can be complicated, and I can just do it for so long before I have to step away and look out my window.  I’ve been watching the workers pour the new sidewalks in the city park.  They have been very painstaking in their work.  Nice job, guys!

Well, it’s back to those spreadsheets, and…Keep Thinking Libraries!

Did You Know… that some of our past magazines are now located in the same areas where we have books by the same topic such as scrapbooking, quilting, cooking, and gardening? Some of our non-fiction videos are also located with books with the same subject.

Behind My Desk… What a week! National Library Week at the Atlantic Public Library was different this year! We had a terrific turn out for the Dome Theater on Monday. The upstairs certainly looked different with an inflated giant blue igloo in the middle of everything! We had to make last minute adjustments, but it worked out fine.

I want to extend a special thank you to all the Friends who have or will have worked on the Book Sale. I do appreciate your willingness to volunteer for this project.

In case there are some patrons who are not able to download ebooks and audiobooks from WILBOR, I want to clarify something we have learned. Only Atlantic residents and Cass County Residents are allowed to use WILBOR from the Atlantic Public Library website or catalog. The reason is because of copyright restrictions and a contractual agreement with the vendor about who can legally use the service. Open Access patrons (patrons whose residence is in another county or in an incorporated town in Cass County) need to use their “home” library for WILBOR services.

Finally, yes, it’s true. I will be retiring at the end of 2012. I’m looking forward to a different life, but I do plan on staying in Atlantic for at least a little while.

Time to start cleaning my office again…Keep Thinking Libraries!
